All about the Vietnamese walking stick insects...

Vietnamese or Annam Walking Stick Insects are dark brown in color and resemble twigs. They sport a sleek build and have long slender antennae and a tapering head. Their mouth parts have specially evolved to open horizontally to make it easier for them to feed on vegetation.

Although they are monomorphous, males are sleeker in n build and have slightly longer antennae.

Diet

They are herbivorous feeding on a variety of vegetation.

Habitat

Vietnamese Stick insects are endemic to the tropical rainforest habitats of Vietnam

Reproduction

They, like other walking stick insects, have a fascinating ability to camouflage themselves from their predators. They mimic dark brown twigs. Their slender build and dark brown color mimic brown twigs. Their slow movement and gently moving legs mimic twigs swaying in the wind.

They procreate through parthenogenesis (asexually). This would mean that the egg develops without being fertilized. Since fertilization is not required for the procreation of these insects, male Vietnamese walking sticks are rarely seen.

Conservation

Since the Vietnamese walking stick insect populations in the wild are considered to be stable, they are categorized as Least Concern by the International Union for World Conservation.
