Gibbons are monogamous, meaning they have a single mate. They live
in small family groups with male actively participating in rearing
offspring. their distinct call or song is used to defend their
territory and to attract a mate. Brachiation, or swinging
hand-over-hand through trees, is their primary method of travel
through the forest canopy. Gibbons can easily span a gap of 30 feet
between one tree and another but, because they cannot swim, they
avoid crossing open water.
